Western Region

The western region of the wildlife Clubs of Kenya encompasses the formerly known western province and parts of the Rift Valley. It covers the counties of Kakamega,Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, parts of Nandi and West Pokot. The region is served from the WCK’s Lake Victoria environmental education Centre located in Kisumu City. The western region equally has several destinations that offer unique experiences to visitors. Here are some areas to explore as you learn about nature in the western Kenya.

Kakamega Forest:

This is a unique tropical rainforest that is a home to variety of bird and animal species, including primates such as black and white colobus monkeys. The forest is located in Western Kenya and it is one of the last remaining tropical forest in Kenya. It is rich in biodiversity and is a home of over 400 species of butterflies, and various species of primates including the endangered monkey.
Some products found in the kakamega forest include honey, medicinal plants and timber. The honey produced in the forest is known for its unique flavor and is highly sought after in the local markets. The medical plants are widely used in traditional medicine and are known to have healing properties for various ailments.
Here are some reasons why Kakamega forest is a must visit destination for wildlife club members.

  • Nature walks and hikes: Visitors to the forest can take a long nature walks and hikes through the forest. This gives the opportunity to explore different species of flora and fauna.
  • Bird watching: The forest is a haven for bird watchers. Visitors can observe some of the rare bird species in the forest.
  • Cultural tours: Visitors can visit the surrounding communities to experience the local culture, their way of life and traditional food.
  • Wildlife watching: Visitors can observe some of the species of wildlife that call the forest home, such as monkeys, baboons and bushbucks.
  • Top tree canopy walks: Visitors can take top tree canopy walks to take a spectacular views of the canopy and the surrounding forest.
  • Medicinal plant tours: Visitors can take tours to learn about different species of medicinal plant and their uses.
  • Camping: Camping is allowed in designated areas in the forest. Visitors can camp overnight and experience the serenity and peacefulness of the forest.
  • Photography: The beautiful scenery and wildlife in the forest provide great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture memorable moments
  • Picnic: Visitors can have picnic in the designated areas in the forest while enjoying the scenic views.

SAIWA SWAMP NATIONAL PARK

The swamp is located in the western part of Kenya, approximately 385 kilometers from the capital city of Nairobi. It is the smallest national park in Kenya. The park was established in 1974 with the aim of conserving the endangered Sitatunga antelope, which is only found in the marshy areas of western Kenya and part of Central Africa.

The most significant feature of swamp, which is the only remaining habitat for the Sitatunga antelope in Kenya. The park also has several other small wildlife species, including bushbucks, otters, mongooses and monkeys. Over 372 birds species have been recorded in the park, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

The park has a boardwalk that allows visitors to walk around the swamp safely and spot the Sitatunga antelope grazing in the water. Additionally, there are several guided walking tours around the park, which provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about the park unique wildlife ecosystem.

The best time to visit the park is between June and September when the weather is dry, and the antelopes are easier to spot. The park has basic facilities, including campsite and picnic areas.

 

Saiwa Swamp National Park is a beautiful destination for wildlife club members and other nature lovers or conservationist interested in studying and preserving the Sitatunga antelopes and its unique habitat in Africa.

MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK

The Park is located on the boarder of Uganda and Kenya. On Kenyan side the site, the park can be accessed from the town of Kitale.

Tourist Attractions.

  • Hiking and Trekking: It is the perfect destination for hiking and trekking enthusiasts. The park has several trails that lead to the summit of the mountain. The hikes range from easy to challenging and take anywhere from day to eight days
  • Wildlife and Bird Watching: It is a national park which is a home to over 300 birds’ species, including several endemic species. Visitors can also spot forest monkeys, baboons, hyenas and elephants
  • Cultural Tours: visitors can also visit the nearby communities and learn about the local cultures.

CRYING STONE.
The Crying Stone of Ilesi is a unique natural formation located in the western part of Kenya, specifically in Kakamega County. The stone gets its name from the fact that water droplets seem to trickle down its sides, giving the illusion that it`s crying. Many tourists and locals visits the place to experience the fascinating legend behind it.

According to the locals, the rock is weeping because of a woman who was turned to stone after mistreating her guests. The legend goes that a man and his two children were travelling when they chanced upon the woman`s home. The woman refused to give them hospitality, instead offered them poisoned food and drink. As a punishment for the cruel behavior, she was turned into stone, and the rock began to cry as a symbol of her remorse.

Apart from the legend, the crying stone of ilesi is a great tourist attraction due to its unique natural formation and picturesque setting. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area, hike up the nearby hills and take memorable photos. The site is also rich in history as there are archaeological sites nearby.
